You will need the following:

* A Carnet de Passage en Douane (RAC) £85 for members

* International Driving Permit (I suggest you get two in case you dont get one back) (RAC or Post Office) £5.50
* Vehicle Registration Document (also take photocopies)
* Lots of passport photos for Visas (I did them using a colour printer onto Photo quality paper)
* Vehicle Insurance Documents
* Travel Insurance Policy and emergency details noted separately
* Passports (and photocopies)

You should join the RAC to get the various things noted above.

Carnet

The Carnet is a Customs document for temporary import of a vehicle. There are three kinds:

* A Cash deposit (maximum amount accepted £10,000)
* A Bank Guarantee - NOTE some banks are better than other and/or have limits. I moved to first direct and they provided one. My original bank had a £25,000 limit, FD dont have a limit.
* An insurance based indemnity (through specialist R L Davison) 50% of the premium will be refunded on return, tate was 10% of security for our band

IMPORTANT NOTE: The amount of security required for a Carnet varies from 100% to 500% (Egypt, India & Pakistan) of the declared vehicle value

Worked example, Vehicle value £10,000 (DON'T include overland conversion costs and use lowest acceptable market value) travelling though Egypt:

Security required therefore 500% of £10,000 = £50,000

Cash deposit not an option, Bank guarantee £150, Insurance £5,000

The RAC are very helpful indeed, Carnet contacts are Paul Gowan (PKGowen@rac.co.uk) or Sue Collins (sjcollins@rac.co.uk) on 01454 208000
